Party Etiquette: What to Bring to a Big Party

Hi Penelope,
I have been invited to a "new apartment" party for a guy friend of mine who recently relocated to NYC. He's renting, so I wouldn't consider it a house warming party. Due to the large number of people invited, I think that he's going to have a full bar and possibly have the party catered. He said that we don't need to bring anything, but I would love to take him a little something. I've heard it's not polite to take alcohol to a catered party with an open bar. Is this correct? If so, do you have any ideas on what I could take besides alcohol?
Thanks.

Party Etiquette 101: Giving and Un-Giving Party Gifts

Hi Penelope-
I’m hoping to get your opinion on a party etiquette question. I recently attended a friend’s bridal shower and brought about 100 of my gooey chocolate chip cookies that I had stayed up late the night before to make. The other party guests were all on various diets and didn’t touch my cookies, so at the end of the shower I mentioned something to the host about taking them home. She looked at me like I had offered to kill her 5 year-old daughter. Is it really so wrong to take something you brought back, if no one appreciated it?
