What is Sweetest Day?

Recently, some of my readers have noticed Sweetest Day on the MyPunchbowl.com Reasons to Party list and are wondering what, in fact, Sweetest Day celebrates. Contrary to what you might think, this holiday is not a candy holiday. It actually began in Cleveland, Ohio, as a way to remember the underprivileged of the city with small gifts or gestures that let them know that they were, in fact, cared for.

The holiday, while not as widespread as it should be, is expanding slowly across the United States, and for good reason. Sweetest Day is on October 20th this year, and even if we can't solve the world's poverty problem or erase homelessness in one day, we can at least make the effort to reach out to the less fortunate on this sweetest of days.

Unsure of what you can do on Sweetest Day? Remember that it's the thought that counts. A small word or gift can do more to change the day or the disposition of someone who's struggling than we tend to think. Donating clothing, time or money to a charity is a good place to start. Shelters for the homeless and for abused women are always in need of help. Anything you can think of that might help October 20th live up to the name of Sweetest Day is better than nothing at all.

Another thing to do on Sweetest Day: be grateful for what we have. No matter how little it may seem to us at times, it's more than others have.

Enjoy Planning.
