Party Attire: How Much Jewelry is Too Much?
I ran into a friend of mine at the grocery store today, where she was shopping for a bottle of wine. She was on her way to a dinner party, and wanted my advice about what she was wearing. Her worry was that she had too much jewelry on, and in fact she did. By having her remove her necklace and keep the earrings and bracelet she was wearing, I was able to simplify her dinner party look and thought I would share some excellent party attire advice with you, my readers.
A favorite rule of my mother's (and some of yours, undoubtedly) when it comes to how much jewelry one should wear to a party is this: before you walk out the door, remove one item. It's a tactic typical of French women, and I'd say they've got glamorous down. While your jewelry look might feel balanced to you, it can appear crowded or chaotic to others. You can never go wrong if you keep your party look simple and fresh, and that's what this rule helps to accomplish.
Now, if you're on your way to a Halloween party dressed as a trophy wife, it would be fantastic to pile on the diamonds (or rhinestones) and really overdo it. For everyday occasions such as a dinner party, however, less is definitely more. Next time you're on your way out the door, stop, look in the mirror, and remove an item of jewelry to get your party look down to its base. You'll look clean, sophisticated and tastefully put together, and it's one less thing to worry about taking off when you get home!
Enjoy Planning.
