Party Attire: What to Wear to a Low-Key Party

Penelope!
I have exhausted my options and face trying to dress appropriately for a party on a lake. Now I don't mean a "float as you are," but more of a “try to make a splash without looking too flashy or trendy" kind of party, if you understand what I mean. My friends think that "dressed up" means jeans and they are just too hot to wear at this time of year. What do you think? I'd love to hear from you and think your site is wonderful!

Dear Carlie-
I feel your pain. I love to dress up, and I know it can be frustrating to be in a social setting with people who interpret “formal” as “I should probably wear shoes to this one.” For your lake party attire, I would recommend wearing a summery dress. Dresses are more popular than usual this season and are coming in all sorts of wonderfully light fabrics, so you’ll have lots of options to choose from. By choosing a dress, you’ll be able to tailor your appearance to those around you without compromising your comfort or your sense of style. If the other partygoers will truly be arriving to the party in jeans and T-shirts, pair your dress with simple jewelry and simpler sandals. Enjoy your lake party and good luck at the lake with the Jeans Brigade!

Enjoy Planning.
