Labor Day Party Planning, Sans Sippy Cup
Hey Penelope,
My girl friends and I are all single and 25-ish and sick to death of reading about family fun and children’s parties. Can you give us an idea for a fun party to throw this Labor Day that doesn’t involve sippy cups or three-legged races? Thanks.

Dear Blair,
Ahh, to be 25 again. I remember sitting in the waiting room of a doctor’s office for an appointment when I was about 25 and being surrounded by mothers who were discussing their children in what struck me as the most self important, over indulgent tones I had ever heard. I swore to myself that I’d never be like that, and very recently caught myself doing exactly the same thing in the checkout line of a grocery store. It’s contagious once one has kids, and terribly difficult to avoid because mothers of young children do tend to have a lot in common.
That said, I understand how frustrating it is to feel like an American Bridget Jones, surrounded by Smugly Marrieds. So my carefree Labor Day suggestion to you is to throw a Labor Day Lovers party. Invite all of your single female friends, and tell them that their ticket in to the party is two of their single guy friends. Have lots of delicious, summery drinks on hand for the Labor Day festivities, and make it a point to meet and greet as many strangers as possible.
Now I know how it looks, but this isn’t a ploy to get you to settle down. It’s a way to surround yourself with people with whom you have something in common. Instead of suffering through Labor Day weekend at a married friend’s family cookout convinced that something's wrong with you because you don't know what Webkinz are, celebrate being young and single with all of the young single people you can find.
Take advantage of this time in your life. Even if you don’t end up married with children, you’ll catch yourself one day in the future having a conversation you swore you’d never have, saying something your mother always used to say or complaining about how rude young people are. For the time being, have a great Labor Day party and enjoy being young and carefree.
Enjoy Planning.
