Planning a Leafy Labor Day Party

Dear Penelope,
Since Labor Day signifies the end of summer and the beginning of fall, I can never decide what kind of decorations, theme or party food to go with. This Labor Day, I’m thinking of focusing more on the fall side of Labor Day, kind of a leaf theme. I know I’ll decorate with the typical fall colors of orange, red, and yellow, but was hoping you could steer me in the right direction for what to serve my guests. Anything come to mind?

Dear Sylvie,
Lots of things come to mind! For beverages, I suggest apple cider not for its typically “fall” connotation but for its beautiful color. Since Oak Leaf Tea doesn’t sound very appetizing, I’d say the best you can hope for when applying your leaf party theme to beverages is that you’ll be able to mimic the right color, which cider does perfectly.

For your appetizers and desserts, I’d serve small, leaf shaped treats; cookie cutters can be bought at any home goods store and used to mold almost anything. Molasses cookies strike me as ideal for your autumnal Labor Day dessert because they’re a delicious fall treat and echo the earthy tones you’ve chosen for your leaf themed Labor Day party.

In terms of the main course, I’d suggest doing something simple and not giving in to the temptation to make heavier, more typically fall food. Grilled lamb or even lobsters will echo your color choices nicely without making your Leafy Labor Day party feel like you’re celebrating Thanksgiving early. Have a wonderful Labor Day and enjoy the end of summer!

Enjoy Planning.
