Five Holiday-Inspired Theme Parties
The holidays are fast approaching and you know you want to have a party, but you're not sure what type of party. That's ok, that's why you're reading this. Here are five tried and true holiday themes that will surely make for a fun and memorable holiday party.
Ugly Sweater Party. I think we all remember the scene from Bridget Jones Diary when Mark Darcy has on his ugly Christmas sweater. Could it be? Does he really think that's stylish? It was a gift so he had to wear it. If you host an ugly sweater party you'll finally have someplace to wear that ugly holiday sweater that's been sitting in your closet for years. PARTY TIP: Have guests vote for the best (or worst) sweater and give a prize to the winner...a new sweater?
Gingerbread House Showdown. Break guests into teams who each get their own gingerbread kit (house shape is the same for everyone). You can decide if you want all of the teams to have the same "supplies" or if each team can scheme ahead of time to come up with unique decorations. Play holiday music, eat cookies, and have fun competing to decorate your gingerbread houses. PARTY TIP: Find three judges (husbands, neighbors, etc) to fairly judge the showdown!
Santa's Workshop Party. At this time of year, especially it's always important to think of those less fortunate. Instead of (or in addition to) gifts you would have normally exchanged at your party, ask guests to each bring a gift for a child. There are a number of programs that accept and disseminate presents, such as Toys for Tots. PARTY TIP: Most organizations don't want the presents wrapped so save the pretty paper for your family's gifts.
Tree Trimming Party. This is one of the more traditional holiday parties, but I think they are less popular because most hosts want to have their tree done and on display for their Christmas party. However, a tree trimming is a more casual type of holiday party. Light a fire, drink some egg nog and get into the holiday spirit by decorating the tree with good friends and family. PARTY TIP: Add to your tree trimming party by including an ornament exchange. That way you'll get some new ornaments as will your guests for their tree at home!
Holiday Shopping Party. At home parties are all the rage. From jewelry and purses to candles and kitchen products, there is really something for everyone. The holidays are a great time to have a "hostess party" because your guests have an excuse to buy more -- they're not just shopping for themselves! PARTY TIP: Make sure to have the party early enough that guests receive their orders in time for Christmas.
Enjoy Planning.
