Fun, Simple Holiday Wreaths
I've got a great holiday decoration tip for anyone out there looking to make their winter holiday decorations stand out from the crowd. Instead of the same old holiday wreaths on every window and door of the house, I like to let my kids personalize their wreaths with fun, simple touches that make each wreath exciting and different.
Last year, for instance, I bought several basic wreaths from a nearby garden store, then went hunting for beads, buttons, toys and baubles--anything small that could be incorporated into the wreaths to give them a unique feel. I had Maggie and William each choose their favorite pieces, then used a simple needle and (green) thread or a gluegun, as the accent dictated, to incorporate the accents into both kids' wreaths. Maggie chose a handful of funky strawberry buttons that I had found hiding in the back of a local fabric store, and William chose to use the classic plastic GI Joe models and some bright blue beads for his wreath. Maggie's wreath was hung on her door, and William's on his.
As an early Christmas present this year, I'm threading a gorgeous assortment of bright red buttons (the clothing fasteners, not the actor) into a simple green wreath for my mother, who loves to sew. I've got some leftover strawberry buttons, some faux ruby buttons and a bunch of classic flat, circular plastic buttons. The gift will be simple to make but totally unique, and a perfect holiday accent for the red front door of my parents' house.
These wreaths are simple and fun to make on your own--just buy a few simple holiday wreaths and any unique accents you might like to incorporate into them. Some fun ideas to spruce up your holiday wreaths are: fake ivy, fake berries, dried flowers, buttons, beads, small toys, Christmas tree ornaments or even holiday-colored individually wrapped tea bags (I'm thinking Irish Breakfast and Cinnamon Apple). Anything goes with these wreaths...that's where the fun comes from!
Enjoy Planning.
