Halloween Parties: To Theme or Not To Theme
Dear Penelope,
I’m throwing a Halloween party this year, and wondered if you had any thoughts on party themes. Do I need one? Or is it ok to just go with Halloween as my theme and let my guests figure it out for themselves?

Dear Judy,
When it comes down to the choice between theme or no theme, I tend to advise party hosts to go with a theme, particularly during Halloween party season. Since Halloween is a big party holiday, there are bound to be at least five or six generic Halloween parties in each neighborhood. Leaving it to your guests to decide how to dress and what to bring tends to send the message that you're disinterested in your own party, even if you aren't.
A theme, on the other hand, will help to differentiate your party from the others and will certainly help you in choosing specific decorations, costumes, food and music for your Halloween party this year. A themed Halloween costume party will also mean a creative challenge for your party guests and will get them engaged in the party process. They’ll be sure to remember your party because it wasn’t just another Halloween party—it had that fun game, costume contest or decorative theme that showcased your talent as a party host and made your guests feel like you had taken the time to make the party special for them.
Have fun and Happy (early) Halloween!
Enjoy Planning.
