Themed Halloween Party: Which Witch?
Hi Penelope,
I’m trying to narrow down my Halloween party to a specific theme. I’d like to have some sort of costume contest, but can’t decide how to make it specific enough so that the contests can be compared. Any thoughts?

Dear Alex,
I definitely have some thoughts on the matter. One thought, in fact, that would be perfect. Throw a Which Witch? party this Halloween. Ask that partygoers come dressed as witches, and stress that prizes will be given to the most original witch costume so that you don’t end up with a bunch of black hatted, broomsticked women with papier mache cats on their shoulders.
If you want to play it safe, you’ll want to designate an alternate costume category for your male guests, but I think that asking both sexes to dress as witches could make for one very exciting Halloween party. As I’ve said before, Halloween is one of the best opportunities to escape the everyday, and I can’t think of a better way for your male party guests to escape their everyday lives than by dressing up like witches.
If your Halloween guests aren’t sure which witch tack to take, encourage them to draw inspiration from popular movies and TV shows in the recent (or not so recent past). You’ll probably end up with a Wicked Witch of the West, a Glenda the Good Witch, a couple of girls dressed as the everyday witches of Charmed and one or two Sabrina the Teenage Witches. Personally, my favorite witch personality is Samantha, from Bewitched. Dressing like her allows for some great 60s outfits, but still definitely qualifies as a witch costume.
Have fun with your Which Witch? party and make sure you practice wiggling your nose like Samantha before the party starts so you don’t end up looking like you’ve been stuck in a dusty attic all day!
Enjoy Planning.
