Planning a Circus Themed Halloween Party

Dear Penelope,
My kids want to do a Circus themed Halloween party this year. Any invitations or ideas that work for that kind of Halloween party?

Dear Cindy,
You’re in luck! MyPunchbowl.com has a great online invitation template that will work perfectly for your Halloween Circus Party. While some people may be afraid of clowns, I think the clown on this party invitation looks friendly, and I love the colors in the background…it’s just right for a Halloween party! Check it out:

As for suggestions for your circus themed Halloween party, I have quite a few! I threw a similar circus party a few years ago for William’s birthday (he went through a clown phase where he had to wear a red rubber nose everyday no matter what…it was actually quite cute). This party is all about what kind of stuff you have: a face painter, cotton candy and popcorn machines, a hot dog roaster, a blow up tumble tent, you get the picture. One favorite party planning trick of mine is to ask a couple of teens from a local gymnastics school to come do a little show at the party…they’ll often come for little or no charge and they keep kids entertained better than almost anything else I’ve tried.

If you can’t secure a hot dog roaster or a pop corn machine, don't fret. You can easily find those fun red and white popcorn containers at most party supply stores and fill them with microwave popcorn, and hot dogs off the grill will taste just as good to your Halloween party guests, I promise. Can’t find a face painter? Buy a face painting kit and take turns with the other parents at your party painting your kids’ and guests’ faces with whatever circus character or animal motif they’d like.

Remember that, for a kid, the exciting part of a circus party isn’t necessarily having a professional on hand to serve hot dogs or paint faces—it’s getting the special treatment that parents can give just as well as party professionals. Halloween and the circus are both about having fun in a fantasy world, and as long as your pint-sized party guests feel special and as though they've been transported away from school, they’ll be sure to have a great time.

Oh, and don’t forget a CD of animal sounds!

Enjoy Planning.
