Spooky Cookie: Halloween Cookie Decorations

Not sure how to take your cookies to the next level of Halloween spookiness? I've got a great idea that'll help boost your cookies' spookiness score in the Halloween treats department. First, of course, you'll need some appropriately-colored cookies. I suggest working with gingerbread cookies (even though they're more traditionally associated with Christmas) because of their smooth, dark color.

I like to play up the colors of Halloween (particularly red) with my spooky cookies, and food coloring is a great way to turn regular old white icing into a bloody or candy-colored cookie coating. Since food coloring comes in liquids and gels and can vary in intensity, I suggest adding your food coloring in small increments so as not to overdo the color. That said, I love to make my Halloween cookie icing as dark red as possible, and I often use a gel-based food coloring to achieve that perfect blood red color.

In order to achieve the rows of teeth that I like to have on my Halloween Vampire Cookies, I use white Airheads (a popular taffy candy that can be found at most grocery and drug stores) for their tart taste and their perfect consistency. Simply roll a white Airhead out on a cutting board and cut sharp teeth shapes out of the it, and then lay them on top of your blood red icing in the shape of a mouth. If you're really looking for that bitten-into effect, use the edge of a flower-shaped cookie cutter to make it look like someone's taken a bit out of each cookie, and then lay the teeth shaped Airhead pieces along the bite line.

With deep red icing and scary vampire teeth on each spooky cookie, you'll be sure to scare your Halloween party guests silly!

Enjoy Planning.
