Welcome Guests with a Fabulous Scarecrow

A great host thinks of every detail for their party. Creating a party atmosphere before guests even enter your home is one of those details that can really impress your guests. One way to do that for your fall parties...make a scarecrow!

Scarecrows were originally created to scare away crows (hence the name) from farms and gardens, but today they are also used as a popular decoration for the fall. Check out these tips for how to make a scarecrow that will look just at home on your lawn in time for Halloween and other fun fall parties:

  • For materials, you will need a pole of some sort, articles of clothing, and hay or newspaper to use for stuffing. Scarecrows are not gender specific so you can dress your scarecrow in any sort of fashion that you choose.
  • To make the scarecrow’s head, you can use anything from a bucket to a stuffed pillowcase filled with hay or even a styrofoam ball from a craft store. If you decide not to make a head, just simply place a hat over the top of the long pole. You may want to tie or staple the hat to the pole though so that it securely stays in place on a windy day.
  • For arms, use hay to stick out of the shirt sleeves to make it look like the scarecrow’s hands. Another option is to use two sticks or brooms of about the same size to make arms.
  • Have fun and be creative in building your scarecrow. Use buttons for the face and top your scarecrow off with a fun straw hat. It will be a great conversation piece when you have guests over.
  • Once the season is over, store your scarecrow in a dry place so that you can use it again next year!
Enjoy Planning.
