Tips for a Safe & Fun Halloween
With Halloween on a Saturday this year, things are bound to get a little crazy. Between the parties and festivals, and don't forget about trick or treaters, there will be lots of people out in costume this Halloween.
If you're like me, you're always concerned your kids trick or treating. Here are some pretty basic guidelines for Halloween night to ensure everyone has a safe and fun evening:
1) Pick a neighborhood that you know. Whether it's your neighborhood or a friend's neighborhood, it's always a good idea to know at least a few people.
2) Go trick or treating in a neighborhood that has sidewalks, preferably side streets off the main road. Particularly on a night when there is a higher likelihood of driving under the influence, keep kids safe by keeping them off the roads.
3) Go to houses that look inviting and avoid the ones that are dark and scary. It's probably not on purpose but rather done intentionally to make it look like no one is home, a sign that they don't want to be bothered.
4) Don't take any candy that isn't wrapped. This means no homemade cookies, brownies, or candy apples.

5) Make sure the kids wash their hands when they get back to the house. With all of the germs floating around and allergens from peoples houses, it's better to keep the kids clean.
6) If the kids are a little older and insist on going trick or treating alone, make sure they know to always stay in a group and carry a cell phone in case of emergency.
7) Some Halloween costumes are famous for being dark and forboding, but it's hard to see those costumes in the dark. Strategically place reflective tape on the costume or on their shoes.
8) Go trick or treating early in the evening. The kids will get first dibbs at the candy, and you'll get them off the streets before things get too crazy.
If you're concerned about trick or treating this year for safety reasons, host a kids costume party at your house instead! Have the kids come over in costume, play some games, trick or treat as a group to a few houses, and come back for more games and a few pieces of candy.
Enjoy Planning.
