Cinco de Mayo Party Theme
The other day I asked my son William what "Cinco de Mayo" meant to him. "Um... the 5th of May?" he replied. It was one of those cute kid moments, but I think its important to know the meaning behind why we celebrate holidays.
Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May commemorates the 1862 victory by Mexican forces, including ordinary citizens, over French soldiers. The battle known as La Batalla de Puebla or The Battle of Puebla took place on May 5th. This victory did not win the war but it showed the courage and strength of the Mexican troops and became a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. Everyone likes a party - so why not celebrate the culture and experiences of Mexico and Mexican-Americans and hold a fiesta?

Here in New England we’re just waiting for an excuse to fire up our grills after the long winter. Here’s a party planning idea for a casual Cinco de Mayo celebration: a "create your own fajitas" theme.
Set out warm tortillas, grilled chicken or steak, chipotle sour cream, homemade guacamole, shredded Mexican cheese and of course chips and salsa. Decorate with festive streamers, hang a sombrero or bull pinata outdoors for the kids and you're all set!
Here's an easy recipe for Chipotle Sour Cream that will make your fajitas sizzle:
Chipotle Sour Cream
- 1 cup light sour cream
- 2 teaspoons minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce
- 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro
- 1 garlic clove, minced
In medium bowl, combine sour cream, chipotle chiles, cilantro and garlic; mix until well blended. Cover and refrigerate several hours to let flavors marry.
