Cinco de Mayo Party Planning
I'm always looking for ways to involve the kids in party planning. Here's a unique Cinco de Mayo decorating idea which includes the kids AND makes a fun science experiment.
Dye white carnations red and green to celebrate the Mexican flag. Florists do it all the time and its easy and fun!

Here's what you'll need for these colorful, festive decorations:
- White carnations
- non-toxic food coloring
- Plastic or glass vases (you can even cut half-gallon milk containers in half)
1. Start with white carnations- use flowers that are fully in bloom.
2. Cover the table with a plastic tablecloth or newspaper.
3. Use one of the small bottles (full) of food coloring to 8 oz. of warm water. It will seem like a lot of dye, but the flower can handle food coloring, and you want to make sure they have a rich color.
3. Place the carnations in the colored water, one at a time, and re-cut the stems underwater for fastest results. You will see the color start to spread to the bloom within 20 minutes.
4. Have the kids check back every few hours to see how things are progressing. It may take as much as 24 hours for the colored water to fully work its way up to the white petals.
When you are done, place the carnations in water containing a flower preservative. They should last several days.
Don't forget to save one to tuck behind your ear!
Enjoy Planning.
