Make a Tasty Gingerbread House

Making a gingerbread house brings back memories from my childhood. Every year a neighbor used to invite all the kids over and we'd help make the gingerbread house by putting the gum drops on one at a time. Then a couple weeks later we'd all reconvene to destroy the gingerbread house by eating its walls, floors, and roofing. It was fabulous!

Whether you're looking for an activity for your family or a time-filler for a party (Gingerbread House Showdown, anyone?), making a gingerbread house can be great fun for all ages. Once the gingerbread house is finished it's a great holiday decoration to display. And the beauty of a gingerbread house is that you an decorate it however you'd like. Check out these two gingerbread houses—one is fairly basic and the other is more ornate.

To get started, you can either get a gingerbread house kit at a craft store or you can make one from scratch. Here are some candy ideas for decorating your gingerbread house: gum drops, candy canes, M&Ms, jelly beans and hershey kisses.
