Food alternatives for July 4th party

Dear Penelope-
The 4th of July is coming up and I want to throw a party but I’d like it to be something other than the traditional cookout. Any suggestions?

Chatham, MA

Dear Kate-
The great thing about the 4th of July is that it’s a secular holiday. As long as you’re not one of those un-American freedom haters, you can celebrate our country’s Independence with almost anyone. If the standard barbecue leaves you feeling cold, think about one of the things that make this country worth celebrating—ethnic food! Get some Chinese takeout or have a Build Your Own Taco station with all the fixings.

July 4th

Given Chatham’s waterside location, you might consider having a picnic on the beach before the fireworks (unless that’s too traditional for you, dear). Ask guests to bring their favorite summer food and a blanket, and stake out your front row fireworks seats early. That way, you don’t have to worry about cleaning up your backyard after dear old Uncle Lenny gets drunk and knocks over the charcoal grill.

Whatever you do, have a great 4th.

Enjoy planning.
