Yankee Doodle Candy

Dear Penelope-
We're about to host our annual Clark family 4th of July barbecue. I've got decorations, great food to grill and the only thing we're missing are fireworks for our kids. My husband usually orders them from North Carolina, but this year we found out our favorite vendor is out of business! I'm looking for a fun (and safe) alternative to keep the kids happy. Chelsea, dear-
I have but one word for you: candy. Sure, your children can eat candy all year, but I bet they've never done a 4th of July Patriot Patrol. So much candy comes packaged in red, white and blue--go buy some Airheads in Cherry, Blue Raspberry and Mystery flavors, some Baby Ruths, some Bazooka Joe and some York Peppermint Patties. Hide them around your back or front yard (you'll want to hide the chocolate in shady spots) and tell little Sammy and little Johnny to go patrolling. It's a great, fun family tradition (remember how they just love Easter? it's not because of church, darling) and you'll distract them from the lack of explosive material.

Uncle Sam would be proud. Happy 4th!
Enjoy planning.
