Today's Reason to Celebrate

February 16, 2010 was

Mardi Gras

The parades, the masks, the music, the celebration, it's Fat Tuesday! Although Mardi Gras first came to America in only 1699, it has been an eminent holiday in Paris since the Middle Ages. Mardi Gras is always the day before Ash Wednesday and is a meant to be a day of celebration prior to the fasting season of Lent.

Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world and each region has their own colorful customs and traditions that they follow. In Denmark, there is a festival called the Fastelavn where children play games and dress in costumes. In Italy, people attend the Carnival of Venice and wear beautiful Venecian masks. Fat Tuesday in New Orleans is a decadent celebration, full of jazz music, Zulu parades, and colorful costumes. Joie de vivre!
