This day commemorates the date on which the first World Television Forum was held in 1996. It was first proclaimed as a world holiday by the United Nations General Assembly in order to encourage global exchanges of televistion programs focusing on peace, security, economic and social development, and the enhancement of cultural exchange.
Television has served as a medium of communication, entertainment, and household culture for decades. Since its invention in 1929, it has also become one of the most influential forms of media. With the addition of satellite technology, televisions can broadcast locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.
Besides linking nations, televisions have also become part of people's everyday norms and culture. To celebrate World Television Day, spread the word about this holiday and encourage your local government officials to continue to support the development of television media.
